Why Reused IBC Totes?
Massive Carbon Footprint Reduction
Manufacturing a single new IBC tote generates approximately 170 kg of CO₂ emissions. That includes extracting raw HDPE plastic from petroleum, forming the steel cage, and the energy-intensive blow molding process. When you choose a reconditioned tote, you bypass nearly all of that embodied carbon. Across a fleet of 100 totes, that's 17 metric tons of CO₂ you're keeping out of the atmosphere—equivalent to taking four cars off the road for an entire year.
Conserve Finite Resources
Each new 275-gallon IBC requires roughly 50 pounds of virgin HDPE plastic derived from petroleum and 30 pounds of galvanized steel. By reusing existing totes, we reduce demand for these finite resources. Our cleaning and reconditioning process uses 90% less water and energy than manufacturing from scratch. Over our company's lifetime, we've saved the equivalent of 450,000 gallons of water and prevented nearly 900 tons of plastic from entering the waste stream.
Keep Plastic Out of Landfills
An IBC tote takes over 400 years to decompose in a landfill. Even in recycling facilities, the multi-material construction (HDPE bottle, steel cage, wooden or plastic pallet) makes single-stream recycling difficult. Our specialized process disassembles each component for proper handling: bottles are either reconditioned for reuse or granulated for pellet recycling, steel is melted for reuse, and pallets are repaired or responsibly recycled. We recover up to 95% of the material by weight.

Zero-Landfill Policy
We have committed to sending absolutely zero IBC tote material to landfills. Every container that enters our facility is either reconditioned for reuse, rebottled with a new inner vessel, or fully disassembled for material-specific recycling. Our proprietary sorting process separates HDPE plastic, galvanized steel, and pallet materials into dedicated recycling streams, achieving a 95% material recovery rate. The remaining 5% is processed through energy-recovery facilities rather than landfill disposal. Since implementing this policy in 2020, we have diverted over 1,200 tons of material from regional landfills.
Carbon-Neutral Shipping by 2027
Transportation is the largest source of emissions in our operations, and we are taking aggressive steps to eliminate it. Our roadmap to carbon-neutral shipping includes transitioning our local delivery fleet to compressed natural gas and eventually electric vehicles, optimizing delivery routes with AI-powered logistics software to reduce total miles driven, and purchasing verified carbon offsets for all remaining emissions. We have already reduced per-delivery emissions by 30% since 2022 through route consolidation and load optimization. By 2027, every delivery from IBC Minneapolis will carry a net-zero carbon footprint.
